Dr. Soumita Das has been a faculty member at the Department of Biomedical & Nutritional Science at UMass-Lowell since Sept 2022. She relocated with her team from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) as an Associate Professor. At UCSD she started her research lab and co-founded the HUMANOID Center, to develop disease models in collaboration with academic and industry partners. Dr. Das graduated with an MS in Biochemistry with Advanced Microbiology and completed her Ph.D. in genomics and microbiology followed by post-doctoral training in immunology and cell biology. The Das laboratory is interested in learning the crosstalk between gastro-intestinal cells and microbes that lead to inflammation and chronic diseases. Besides basic research, her group collaborates with computational biologists, physician-scientists, and bioengineers for developing disease models such as “Gut-in-a-dish” models for personalized therapies. Dr. Das is involved in teaching Microbiology to undergraduate students, mentoring first generation college students in the River Hawk Scholars Academy, and the coordination of Pharmaceutical Science Graduate Program. As an Associate Director of the Center for Pathogen Research and Training, her goal is to promote research collaboration and networking between researchers. Dr. Das loves to spend time with her students/fellows and travel with her family.
